Basement Conversions
Converting basements for Dry Storage or Habitable Rooms?
Cellar waterproofing of new build or refurbishment of existing cellars?
Considering tanking or waterproofing a basement?
It is possible to turn a damp or even wet basement or cellar into a habitable room or area used for dry storage, but it is imperative to know the correct waterproofing membrane system to use.

Solution Used:
The Newton 500 range of membrane products are used in all below ground waterproofing applications. The Newton 508, Newton 508 Mesh and Newton 520 membranes are specifically designed for this environment.
Waterproofing basement walls and floors:
The Newton 508 or Newton 508 Mesh membrane would be applied to the walls either to give a waterproof base for a dry-lined or rendered finish respectively. The Newton 508 (8mm cavity) or Newton 520 membrane (20mm cavity) would then be applied to the floor to achieve a completely waterproof system. Drainage products are used as appropriate to prevent the build-up of water and pressure behind the membrane.

Internally applied waterproof membrane installation:
The success of the project depends upon the understanding that BS8102 states that the design of the drainage system should make allowance for water penetration at some point in the future of the buildings life. A drainage mechanism such as our our Newton Titan range of pumps and Newton Basedrain should be designed into the waterproofing system to prevent any water pressure building up that if unchecked could lead to a sealed (tanking only) system failing.
Internally applied systems have the benefit that, should problems occur, the system is accessible for remedial work unlike cementitious systems. Varying factors such as

external ground movement the location of the property, proximity to underground streams and wells all have a bearing on the ultimate design of the project. Companies specializing in this field who have a greater understanding of the above should ideally be used. For a list of Newton Registered Contractors in your area, please contact our office. Basement waterproofing - New built basements
Waterproofing a new build basement using Newton Geo-drain:
The Newton Geodrain membrane is laid to the blinding prior to the slab being poured that goes above the membrane. Enough membrane is allowed for to enable an effective join. The walls are formed by either concrete block or poured concrete using shutters. Once cured and the wall is complete, the Geodrain is fixed to the walls and joined to the Geodrain on the floor. Additional Newton Geotex is wrapped around a perforated pipe set in stone below the junction of the wall and floor. The pipe must terminate to a discharge point.
Newton's Waterproofing Products used in the Solution:
- Newton 508 (for dry lining walls ceilings)
- Newton 508 Mesh (meshed for rendering)
- Newton 520 (for floors)
- Newton Basedrain (for relief of Hydrostatic Pressure)
- Newton Titan Pump Systems (sump and pump solution where natural drainage not possible)
- Newton Nu-seal Plugs (white/red)
- Newton Rope
- Newton Tape
- Newton Overtape
- Newton Geodrain (for exterior application on newbuild)
- Newton Geotex (to wrap around perforated drain)
