Damp or Wet Arches and Under Pavement Vaults?

Under pavement vaulted popular areas to be converted where space is at a premium!

Newton 500 lath to listed vaults British museum It is possible to turn a damp or even a dripping wet arch or vault into a habitable room, work area or space used for dry storage or living accommodation. Because vaults and arches are subject to the possibility of both free water percolating from above and rising hydrostatic water pressure, these areas should be waterproofed with Newton System 500. Our damp-proofing systems are not suitable in these circumstances.

Solution:

Newton System 500 is a water management solution that can be applied to structure. Newton 508 Mesh 8mm meshed membrane is mechanically fixed to the substrate with Newton MultiPlug at a minimum 250mm to 300mm centres. The meshed system allows for direct plastering or rendering to minimise the loss of space within the Arch or Vaulted area and in addition the membrane follows the original contours of the structure retaining the original look and feel of the area. If a direct plaster/render finish is not required, and depending upon the curvature of the arch/vault, Newton 508 membrane may be used with battens fixed at appropriate centres directly to the heads of the MultiPlugs. This approach negates the need for drying out times and allows for electrics and services to be routed between the battens. In addition, insulation can also be applied between the battens if required. As with all cavity drain systems, the membrane applied requires the system to have adequate drainage to remove the water and our Newton Basedrain sited at the wall floor junction should be used in all instances. In most cases this will require one of our sump systems as it is rare for safe gravity fed drainage to be avialble that removes the water down-hill of the property. The flexibility of the Newton membrane system also allows for using Newton 508 Mesh membrane on the vaulted area and plain Newton 508 from the springer level down. This is possible as both membranes have in line stud profiles which can be joined with ease with Newton Waterseal Tape.
