Flooring Membranes

Newton Flooring membranes can be utilised in all forms of construction to deal with a number of damp and waterproofing scenarios to either new or existing structures. Once again, we need to separate the use of our membranes between above ground damp-proofing and below ground waterproofing.flooring-staircase-waterproof

Below ground

All of our flooring membranes can be used as part of a well designed below ground waterproofing system. See Newton System 500 for further details.

Above ground

With existing properties dampness to the floor is often present due to a defective or non-existent DPM, or where the existing DPM has been bridged by external ground levels that have risen over the years (laying of a new drive or patio). Two options are available when faced with a damp floor: replace the floor, or make it dry. If the slab is in poor condition it is often decided to replace the slab and to include a DPM below this. However, in many listed properties the floor cannot be removed for conservation reasons, and so a membrane must be laid above to protect the new floor finish from the dampness within the slab.

Often where a new slab has been laid, commercial time constraints dictate that the floor finish be laid before the new slab is fully dry. Our flooring membranes can be laid as soon as the the 'green' slab can take pedestrian traffic (often the next day), allowing for even moisture sensitive flooring to be laid almost immediately.

Newton 300

Newton 300 is premium quality 3mm studded flooring membrane made from high density polyethylene. As well as separating the dry floor finish from the dampness or contaminants within the slab, the cavity created by the 3mm studs allows for equalisation of the vapour pressure from the damp slab, thus preventing localised areas of vapour pressure.

Newton 300 Tile

The additional mesh to the surface of Newton 300 Lath allows for tile adhesive to be bonded to the surface of the membrane for tile finishes. The bonding fabric to the 'wet side' of the membrane allows for direct bonding of the membrane to the floor slab for a very stable and dry base for tiling onto.

Newton Slimline

At just 1.5mm in profile, Newton Slimline Flooring is the thinnest profile membrane supplied by John Newton.
Screed and Concrete floors have variable drying times, and it is difficult to ascertain when they are completely dry to accept flooring finishes. With Newton Slimline the problem is eradicated as the membrane allows the screed beneath to achieve vapour equalisation whilst allowing the required floor finish to be laid directly above it on a dry surface. The result is a dry floor giving good thermal and sound resistance.

Newton Flooring Membrane Highlights

Newton 300 is supplied in 60m2 rolls and Newton Slimline in 40m2 rolls allowing for large areas to be protected with speed and efficiency.

Newton floor membranes are clean and practical, with no wet trades or drying out periods. In addition it is easy to patch repair damage to the material with Newton OverTape.

Newton membranes do not require surface preparation such as grit blasting or scabbling to remove latents in concrete, and can be laid when the floor surface is still damp. This has a significant advantage as most epoxy finishes require the levels of dampness to be extremely low before application. In addition, most liquid applied products need two coats and for the surface to be primed with a suitable bonding agent, and so Newton membranes are much quicker to install.

Newton flooring membranes are lightweight and very flexible and are quick to install and do not require special tools. The joints are taped and so 'heat permits' are not required on site.

Newton 300 and Newton Slimline are waterproof and highly resistant to gases and chemicals, are resistant to ageing and provide a strong stable surface with the added benefit of good thermal and acoustic properties.

Notes:

1) For tiled finishes, we recommend that or 'Newton 300 Tile' membranes be used.

2) If the floor finish is not being laid immediately, it is recommended that the floor be protected with plywood or similar to prevent damage to membrane by other trades.

3) It is not possible to fit carpet directly onto Newton 300.

Newton 300 very quick to install by being simply rolled out and loose laid onto the floor with butted joints sealed with Newton OverTape. Newton 300 is strong yet very flexible and is easily folded and detailed around service penetrations or returned up the walls to link with a physical damp proof course as required.
