Newlath 2000 Above Ground Damp Proofing FAQ’s

Q. What is Newlath 2000?

A. Newlath 2000 is a BBA certified 5mm high density polypropylene studded membrane which has a heat welded mesh to the front face of the product. With the 5mm studs facing the damp substrate, an air gap is achieved so as to not trap moisture within the walls. The mesh on the front side is a direct key for applying a render, plaster or a plasterboard dot and dabbed. The material is opaque so the original substrate can be seen behind for ease of application.

Q. What size are the rolls of Newlath 2000?

A. Two sizes either 1.5m x 10m covering 15 sqm of wall or 2mx 20m covering 40 sqm of wall.

Q. How is Newlath 2000 fixed to the wall?

A. Use Newlath fixing plugs (250 plugs per bag) with a 7mm drill bit drill through the membrane. Fill the hole with Newton Mastic, then using a club hammer, hammer the Newlath fixing into the substrate (protective goggles must be worn). Fixing centres vary depending upon the condition of the substrate, but as a rule of thumb fix between 250mm and 300mm centres vertically and horizontally.

Q. How many fixings do I need per roll? How many tubes of Newton Mastic do I need per roll?

A. As a guideline we recommend 1 bag of Newlath fixings per 15sqm roll and 3 bags per 40sqm roll.

Note: These guidelines are based on a professional installer fixing the material onto an even brick substrate (Number of fixings may vary indiffering substrates). You will require 4 x tubes of Newton Mastic per 15 sqm roll and 12 tubes per 40 sqm roll.

Q. Can Newlath 2000 be used internally and externally?

A. Yes- The material can be used internally and externally. If used externally fixing centres must be closer to accommodate for increased thermal conditions(150min vertically and horizontally).

Q. I have tried to fix the Newlath 2000 with the traditional Newlath 2000 fixing plug, but the substrate is poor and I am having difficulties. Do you have an alternative fixing plug?

A. Random stone walls, Cobb walls etc. are uneven and may require a longer fixing. Use Newton Cobb fixings (90mm long) with Newton Mastic and proceed as with normal Newlath plugs.

Note: Random and uneven walls should be dubbed out with a tight render coat prior to the application of the material. Do not attempt to level the walls on top of the Newlath 2000 as differential thickness of the material may result in cracking of the finish due to the render/plaster drying out unevenly.

Q. I have applied Newlath 2000 how do I fix shelving units, pictures etc?

A. You can fix through the material back into the originalsubstrate by drilling through the material, apply a rawl plug and fill the holeliberally with Newton Mastic (preventing salts and moisture bridging through)and then proceed with the fixing ofthe units.

Q. How do I deal with the electrics?

A. 1.Chase into the substrate, run the wiring through thechase (the wires must be protected from dampness) and bring electrics boxt hrough the material and seal around the edge with the Newton Mastic. A DPM must encase the back of the box to prevent dampness from bridging through.

2. Conduits can be surface mounted with an adhesive such as Liquid Nails.

Q. Do I have to hack off the plaster/render prior toinstalling?

A. If the plaster/render is solid and shows no signs of blowing then the Newlath 2000 can be installed over the top. If the original finish is friable, it should be removed up to 1.2min height from the floor. The Newlath 2000 is applied to the substrate (If in doubt contact John Newton sales office).

Q. How many coats of render/plaster do I need?

A. In normal circumstance 2 x 6mm coats and a 3mm skim coatare sufficient.

Note: It is essential to allow for sufficient dry time between coats. Refer to the finish specifications in the Newlath fixing instructions prior to application.

Q. If I use Newlath 2000 do I need an injected damp proof course?

A. NO.

Q. My building is a listed structure can I use Newlath 2000?

A. Most definitely. Unlike cementitious alternatives, Newlath 2000 is removable and has been successfully used on Grade I and Iisted buildings since the early 1980’s.

Q. Can I use Newlath 2000 on a timber frame building?

A. Yes. Newlath 2000 is perfect for this application. High grade ply is attached to the frame and the Newlath is attached with galvanized clout nails at 100mm centres prior to the finish being applied.

Q. Once I have installed Newlath 2000 how long can I leave it before I apply a finish?

A. Externally, we advise that you put a finish on the product no less than 4 weeks after installation as the mesh is not UV stabilised. Internally there are no issues.

Q. Can I use Newton damp proofing membranes in a below ground (earth retaining situation)?

A. No. Newlath 2000 is suitable for dealing with all forms of damp conditions above the ground but the fixing plugs do not deal with the potential of running water, and the system has only been independently tested by the BBA for damp-proofing. For retaining structures use Newton System 500 with suitable drainage.

Q. How long is the product warranty valid for?

A. Newlath 2000 holds a 30 year warranty and has been aged tested to circa 50 years.

Q. Can I install Newlath 2000?

A. Yes. Newlath 2000 comes with detailed fixing instructionsand can be installed by a skilled builder. If in any doubt John Newton can recommend professional installers who are highly experienced at fitting the material quickly, and thus cost effectively.
